Petition Signature for Reform The Veterans Affairs System to Ensure Timely and Quality Care

Mai Shannon

The Issue

Veteran Alliance USA, our mission is to ensure that senior veterans receive the timely and quality care they deserve. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we coordinate care for over 2,000 veterans at any given time and advocate for those navigating the complexities of the VA system. Unfortunately, the VA, particularly the Phoenix VA, exemplifies the challenges of government-managed healthcare.Veterans consistently report systemic issues, ranging from delays in care to dismissive responses from VA staff. Despite repeated complaints and efforts to raise awareness, these issues often go unaddressed, with accountability and transparency sorely lacking. Instead of prioritizing meaningful reform, there seems to be an ongoing effort to downplay problems and shield staff from accountability. While no agency is perfect, the unwillingness of the Phoenix VA to acknowledge and address its shortcomings is deeply concerning. Veterans who are seriously ill and in urgent need of care cannot rely on the Phoenix VA to respond in a timely or compassionate manner. Their system is not rooted in value-based care, leaving outcomes for veterans as a secondary concern. We believe our veterans deserve better--systems and processes that prioritize their health, well-being, and dignity. Until the VA adopts a culture of accountability and improvement, we will continue to stand as advocates for those who have sacrificed so much for our nation.  As the founder and CEO of Veteran Alliance USA Inc, I have seen first-hand the tragic effects of delayed and subpar medical service in the Veterans Affairs (VA) system. In my organization's journey of helping more than 16,000 veterans, countless stories of delayed care, inefficient enrollment processes, and less than transparent communications from the VA have surfaced. There are grievous instances of veterans, who served our country with honor, passing away due to the lack of prompt medical care. This in a system which operates without the high standards of care expected of community health providers. Conflicts of interest among VA employees has further compounded this issue, resulting in bureaucratic inefficiencies that put our veterans' lives at risk. This is not a reflection of the respect and care our veterans deserve. According to statistics from the VA's  own Inspector General, approximately 307,000 veterans died waiting for health care applications to be processed. (source: VA IG report, 2015). These may be small to the general public but keep in mind that these are based on complaints not actual numbers. There are so much more unaccounted for.It is high time we demand comprehensive reform in the VA system.  A reform that last longer than just each presidency. A reform that allows public to serve on their board. A reform that requires annual accountability. A reform that is shared that is required to be share with the public without delays. A reform that terminates misconduct from leadership immediately. A reform that holds each and every employee accountable to veterans care and safety.  A reform that holds the VA accountable for their fair share of care costs to our veterans. A reform that limits their budget with performance.  Stand with us today in demanding our veterans receive the quality of care they have earned. Please, sign this petition and support our cause for change in the Veteran Administration system before any more veterans are ignored.
